‘1/24 Social Movement’ protests, the horrible fire and intensive deforestation at the Earth’s lungs – Amazon, by the human chain and silent procession at the Chittagong Press Club premises. Under the authority of the founder of ‘1/24 Social Movement’ – Mr. Mohammad Shahab Uddin, Assistant Professor, Management Department, University of Chittagong, Mr. Babu Ranjit Chowdhury, Professor, Department of Accounting, University of Chittagong acted as the main discusser of the program.
In the human chain, Babu Ranjit Chowdhury Sir says, “The world can’t avoid the liabilities of the Amazon tragedy. The rapid industrialization of the developed countries has caused severe damage to the global climate. The Amazon helps maintain the ecological balance by providing 20% oxygen to the Earth and today the Amazon has been at stake.” He called out on the global leaders to eradicate this situation in the Amazon.
Shahab sir, in his speech, said, “Amazon is located in South America occupying an area of 55 lakh square kilometers of almost 9 countries. 60% of the forest lies in Brazil, 13% in Peru, and the remaining lies in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guiana, Suriname, and French Guiana. The Amazon is one of the most biodiverse places on earth. Amazon is home to almost 2.5 million insects, 16 thousand species of trees, 2 thousand birds, and mammals. About 40 thousand species of shrubs and 3700 species of fish dwell in this forest. Such a huge ecosystem is at risk today. A disturbance in this ecosystem means jeopardy in the overall ecological balance and eventually, our mother Earth falls at stake.” He also discussed the importance of afforestation in this regard.
